Luke 13:10-17 Which Is More Important? (Miller)

Jesus told the synagogue leader that he was only pretending to care about God's law. Jesus told him that, if he were really a person who cared about keeping God's law, he would not want the woman to be bent over one more second. Jesus knew there was a more important commandment: "Love your neighbor." That's the commandment the man should have cared about. The woman was more important than the law about when to work. Jesus did the right thing. He loved his neighbor, so he helped her.

Mark 2:23 – 3:6 The Right Time (Edstrom)

Jesus teaches us to be compassionate – to care about others. When the Pharisees, who paid great attention to the laws, criticized others for doing good works on the Sabbath (Sunday, God's day) Jesus said to them, when a man with a withered arm came to him to be healed, "Is it lawful on the Sabbath day to do good, or to do harm?" (3:4). They did not answer him. Jesus had compassion for the man and healed him, even though it was the Sabbath, because it was the right thing to do.

Luke 13:1-9 Finding Sweetness (Edstrom)

If you planted a fig tree wouldn’t you expect it to grow figs? You wouldn't expect it to grow oranges or apples or cherries. The purpose of a fig tree is to grow figs. We also have a purpose – each one of us. We have been given life by God – we need to use our lives to produce something of value. We need to make our lives count.

John 1:29-42 Who Are You? (Edstrom)

We have often heard the story of the birth of Jesus. Long before he was born people talked about a way they would know that Jesus was the Son of God. They said there would be a sign from heaven -- a dove. At the time that Jesus was baptized, John the Baptist, and others who were there, saw the sign proving that Jesus was the Son of God. John said, "I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove out of heaven, and it remained on him" (1:32).

Luke 12:49-56 The Present Time (Edstrom)

Jesus says we should think about the future, especially our future with God, but he also advises us to think about the present time. He advises us to be aware of what is going on around us right now. Notice things - the way sun shines through the rain causing a rainbow, the way a flower grows, the way moonlight shines through your window. Notice the pattern of stars, how a stone feels in your hand, how fresh bread smells while it is baking, and how good it feels to be hugged by your mom or dad.

Luke 12:49-56 At The Present Time (Edstrom)

We all need time to daydream, gather new ideas and make plans. If most of our time is spent thinking about the future, we are not involved in the present. We miss opportunities to work at something we love, to help others or to spend time with our family and friends. Jesus' message seems to be that we should set priorities and decide what is important for the present time. Then, we will be able to balance our time between planning for the future and being productive and effective with our everyday activities.

Luke 12:32-40 God Gives Us Friendship (Miller)

Jesus talks a lot about the kingdom of God. A lot! Does anyone know what a "kingdom" is? A kingdom, in Jesus' time, was a large group of people who lived in a land that had a king for a leader. The king usually promised to take care of the people in his kingdom. He protected them from other kings and kingdoms. If you had a good king as your leader, you tried to do the things that the king thought were important. You may even have had a picture of him on your wall.
