Luke 2:1-20 Happy Birthday (Edstrom)

Today I've brought a birthday cake to celebrate the day Jesus Christ was born. The cake has four candles on it, one for each of the past four weeks of Advent - the time when we prepared for this day. The larger white candle in the middle of the cake represents this very day - Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ. (Light the candles.) The light that shines from the candles reminds us of the love of God which shines in us when we have faith and believe in the power of God's love.

Luke 2:1-14 He Was Born There (Miller)

Today’s scripture is about Jesus’ parents [ask who knows their names; respect all answers]. And this scripture is also about Jesus being born. Jesus was the most important baby that was ever born. Where would you expect a very, very important baby to be born? [Respect all answers; suggest some fancy places if necessary. Ask them if they know what kind of a place they were born in].

Luke 2:1-14 What Christmas Means (Miller)

Can someone tell me what the shepherds and the sheep saw that night when they were out in the fields? (Accept all answers). They saw a huge, huge bunch of angels all shining with light. They were singing--loud. How would you feel if you saw something like that? I think I might just be so surprised that I couldn’t say a thing! I’d just stand there with my mouth open!

Luke 1:39-55 Mary’s Song (Miller)

Mary was brave and told God that she would do whatever God needed her to do. Mary was faithful! Congratulations, Mary! I hope we will be as brave and faithful when God asks us to do things. Here is a paper with the words on it that God’s messenger said to Mary when God told her about the surprise. Read it at home and put it on the fridge or somewhere that you can see it.

Luke 1:39-55 Magnify Your Joy (Edstrom)

Think about what it would feel like if each one of us could say, "My soul magnifies the Lord" and "my spirit has rejoiced in God my savior…" As you receive God's love, the love of your family and friends, and see the beautiful things in God's world, take time to feel that joy and give thanks. Magnify your joy!

Luke 1:39-55 Magnify the Lord (Edstrom)

The joy that Mary felt, as she prepared for the arrival of Jesus, is available to us as we celebrate his birth. Tonight, Christmas Eve, we have the opportunity to praise God and give thanks for his love. We "magnify the Lord" as we sing Christmas carols, read from the Bible, light candles, pray, and listen to the story of the birth of Jesus.
