Matthew 4:12-23
Follow Me
By Lois Parker Edstrom
OBJECTS SUGGESTED:
Recipe book, baking utensils, bowls, cookie sheets. (cookies optional)
Have you ever seen baby ducks follow along behind their mother? If you have, you know that they are never far from her and go wherever she goes. If she takes them into a lake or pond they usually form a line behind her and follow her through the water. Why do you think they do this? They are learning, from watching their mother, how to get along in the world. They are being imprinted with her actions so they will know how to be a good duck.
If you would like to learn to make cookies, you could open a recipe book and try to follow the instructions, but it would be much easier ifyou had someone to show you how to do it. Your mom or dad can show you how to measure the flour, how to break the eggs, how many chocolate chips to put in the bowl, how to put the dough on the cookie sheet so you will have just the right sized cookie. Big is good!
There are all kinds of wonderful things we can learn by watching others such as how to tie our shoes, how to build a sand castle, how to use a camera, how to pound nails into a board, or how to grow flowers. Can you think of other things that can be learned by watching others?
We can also learn to live our lives with honor when we have a good example to follow. Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee when he saw two fishermen, Peter and his brother Andrew. He said to them, “Come after me….”Immediately they left their nets and followed him. Can you think ofwhy the two fishermen decided so quickly to follow Jesus?
In the Bible we are told and are shown that Jesus was a goodteacher. He spoke words of love, forgiveness and healing. His actions demonstrated these same things. People wanted to be with him so they could learn from him.
We can still learn from the words and actions of Jesus. As we hear and study Bible stories about the life of Jesus and pray for wisdom, we will be shown ways to live our lives with honor. We have the best example.
