1 Corinthians 10:1-13

God Is Faithful

By Lois Parker Edstrom

Object suggested: A backpack.

Many of you may carry a backpack to school. What items do you carry in your pack? Books. Tablets. Pencils. Crayons. A bottle of water. Your lunch. Backpacks seem to have many pockets and spaces that can hold a lot of stuff.

You must make choices about what you want to carry in your backpack, don’t you? What would happen if you filled up every space with whatever came to mind? Yes, your backpack would probably become too heavy for you to manage.

Now think about your backpack in this way: What would happen if, every time you grumbled or complained about something, you had to place a stone in your backpack?

You might not notice the extra weight at first. Perhaps your complaint is very small and you place a small stone in your pack.

But, maybe you find things to complain about all day long and those stones begin to fill your pack. Now your backpack is becoming so heavy you are not be able to manage it. (Demonstrate this idea?)

Let’s think about how to lighten our load. In the Bible, Paul tells us, “No temptation has taken you except what is common to man” (10:13).

This means that we all at one time or another, experience difficulties and must deal with things that trouble us. When these hard things happen we need to make a plan and decide how we can make things better. This doesn’t mean we are never to complain, but it does mean that we have a choice about how we want to react.

The Bible also teaches us, “God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able…” (10:13).

It may be helpful to remember that you are stronger than the troubles that may come your way. Be positive. God is faithful.
