Added to the List

By Lois Parker Edstrom

Object suggested: Grocery list or any other such list, which is handy, for demonstration.

Do you ever make a list? Perhaps you list the things you would like to take when you go on vacation or go to visit your grandparents. Maybe you help your mother prepare a grocery list – things you need for meals and other items like toothpaste or paper towels.

Teachers make lists. They have a list of all the students in their classes. This is called an attendance list and your name is on it. Teachers may also give you a list of good books to read or assignments you must complete.

Sometimes doctors and nurses give you a list of things you must do to stay well.

Can you think of other times you make and use lists?

Jesus talked to his disciples about a heavenly list. He had sent seventy disciples to go out and talk to people about peace and the healing power of God’s love. The disciples did what Jesus asked them to do and then they returned to him. They felt great joy because God’s love was so powerful that even the enemies of God were overcome.

Jesus said, “…don’t rejoice in this… but rejoice that your names are written in heaven”
(10:20).

Because the disciples followed Jesus, because they had spread the good news of God’s love, their names were written on a heavenly list. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have our names on such a list?
