Ephesians 5:8-14

Live in the Light

By Lois Parker Edstrom

Today let’s talk about darkness and light.

When people are ashamed of something they have done what do they usually do? Yes, they try to hide what they have done and keep it a secret. Think about a person who takes something that belongs to someone else. A thief or burglar often steals when it is dark so they won’t be seen and then they try to cover up what they have taken. They may hide what they have stolen in a dark place.

The opposite is true when we do something of which we are proud. We want to show the world. We want to bring our good work out into the light for everyone to see.

Have you ever been to an art gallery? There you find wonderful paintings, sculptures, weavings, and photographs all displayed in beautiful light. We want to be able to see every color and angle of the lovely objects.

The Bible gives us information about darkness and light and offers good advice about how to live our lives. It says, “Live as children of the light––for the fruit of the light is found in all that is good and right and true.”

The light mentioned in the Bible is God’s love. God’s love helps us make good choices–– choices we are not ashamed of, activities and behavior we don’t mind others seeing. The Bible tells us that when we live in the light of God’s love we find all that is good and right and true.

Do good work and live in the light.
