Genesis 21:8-21
God’s Rescue Plan

By Lois Parker Edstrom

Today’s story from the Old Testament is about Hagar, a woman who found herself wandering about in the wilderness with her young son. They had drunk all the water that she carried with her and she did not know where to get more.

She placed her son under some bushes. Perhaps she did this because it was very hot and she wanted to protect him from the sun.

She was so worried her son might die that she sat down and cried. She must have felt quite helpless.

Have you ever felt like that? Sometimes when we deal with a problem it may seem as if there is no solution. We don’t know what to do. We feel helpless.

In Hagar’s case we are told that an angel of God spoke to her and said, “‘Don’t be afraid. For God has heard the voice of the boy where he is'” (21:17).

“God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water” (21:19). She filled her container with water and gave the boy a drink. And the story goes on to tell us that “God was with the boy, and he grew” (21:20).

The lesson of the story is that God is with us. Hagar opened her eyes to God’s message and saw things in a different way. The same is true for us.

When we bring God’s love into our lives we are able to see what God intends for us. As we pray and study God’s word we are able to find solutions to problems that trouble us.

“Don’t be afraid.” God heard the voice of Hagar’s little son and he hears your voice as well.
