Hebrews 1:1-12

Finding Clues

By Lois Parker Edstrom

How can we know God? Do you ever wonder what God is like? It all seems a big mystery, doesn’t it? Perhaps that’s how it is meant to be, but the Bible teaches us that we can know more about God from the stories that have been written about Jesus.

The Bible gives us an account of Jesus’ life when he lived on earth. Today’s verse tells us that God has “spoken to us by his Son (Jesus)” (1:1).

So what do we know about Jesus? We know that he was a kind and loving man. We know that he healed people and we read about his miracles. We know that he gave life to people who had died. We know that he prayed and had great power.

Can you think of other things that describe Jesus? Those things we find out about Jesus are clues to what God is like. Just as in all good mysteries, there are clues along the way. The more we study and learn about the life of Jesus, the closer we get to understanding God’s nature.

Today’s verse tells us that Jesus came to earth with God’s glory and power and then returned to be with God. This is the beauty and mystery of what we believe –our faith.
