Isaiah 35:1-10

Blossom with Joy

What do you imagine when you think of a desert? You might see a place that is hot and dry. There may be lots of sand and cacti growing there. The desert you imagine may be colored in soft oranges, golds, and browns that all seem to blend together. You wouldn’t expect to see a wide variety of bright colors.

A few years ago, a very dry desert in California received record rainfall and guess what happened? The desert filled with beautiful white, pink, lavender, blue, and gold wild flowers. It was a surprise and it was spectacular!

Wildflower seeds had been sleeping in the desert soil for fifty years and when the rain came, conditions were just right for them to bloom.

In the Bible, the prophet, Isaiah spoke about a desert and said this: “The wilderness and the dry land will be glad. The desert will rejoice and blossom like a rose” (35:1).

He goes on to say: The desert “will blossom abundantly, and rejoice even with joy and singing” (35:2).

Isaiah speaks like a poet. Let’s think about our own lives and what happens when we realize how loved we are by God. When we feel loved we are like a desert that blooms after rain. We become the person we are meant to be. We blossom and feel joy. What could be better than that? Rejoice!
