James 2:1-17

Things that Go Together

By Lois Parker Edstrom

Let’s make of list of things that go together:
(Encourage the children’s participation.)

• Ham and eggs
• Peanut butter and jelly
• Pencils and paper
• Sunshine and a picnic
• A wink and a smile
• Ducks and water
• Waves and the sea
• Bedtime and a soft pillow

The reason these things belong together is that one makes the other better and when you have both you have the best combination.

As we read the Bible we learn about two things that must go together: Faith and works. Listen to this verse: “What good is it, my brothers, if a man says he has faith, but has no works?” (2:14).

Faith is what you believe – it is your belief in God. Works is what you do with your faith to help others. The Bible teaches us to put our faith into action. Think about this question: what good is it if we believe in God, but do not share God’s love with others. God’s love produces kindness. It causes us to care about our family, our friends, neighbors, and even people we haven’t met.

(Insert examples of mission and outreach programs that are a part of your church.)

Faith and good work must go together. We need both faith and action to make a difference in our lives and the lives of others. We believe and we act with love.

Faith and good work: One makes the other better. When you have both, you have the best possible combination.
