Children’s Sermon

Luke 1:39-55

Mary’s Song

By Dr. Carol J Miller

Have copies of the announcement to Mary to give the children (see sample below).

Mary had just had some really surprising news! How do you look when you are really surprised? [Let everyone show you at the same time. Wait to continue until everyone has settled down]. Mary’s surprise was that a messenger of God had told her—get ready for this—just told her that she was going to have a baby!! Mary was not planning to have a baby; she wasn’t even thinking of something like that. But God needed her to have a very special baby and to raise that baby up until he was grown up. God must have thought that Mary would be a very good mom for this special baby. I bet you know who that baby was: [Wait for their reply]. That’s right; Jesus.

Well, Mary was so surprised and excited by this really unusual news that she sang a song. We don’t know the tune, but the words mean something like this: First she sang about how wonderful God is and how honored she was to be chosen to help God. She sang about how good God is to everyone.
THEN she sang about all those powerful grown ups; the kings and governors and such who liked to push people around. She said that God was going to take them off their thrones. Then God would take care of the people they have been mean to. Ha! God is good!

Mary said that the rich people who have kept everything for themselves were going to get nothing, and the poor and hungry were going to get everything they need. Jesus is God’s way of making these things happen. This is going to be the most important baby ever born.

Mary was brave and told God that she would do whatever God needed her to do. Mary was faithful! Congratulations, Mary! I hope we will be as brave and faithful when God asks us to do things.

Here is a paper with the words on it that God’s messenger said to Mary when God told her about the surprise. Read it at home and put it on the fridge or somewhere that you can see it.

HANDOUT FOR CHILDREN:

“Rejoice, … highly favored one! The Lord is with you…. “Don’t be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will… (have) a son, and will call his name ‘Jesus.’ He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High…. There will be no end to his Kingdom.” –Luke 1:28-33
