Miracles

By Dr. Dan Wuori

Have you ever heard of a “miracle?” What does that word mean? (Solicit children’s answers.)

Thats right – we call something a “miracle” when something amazing happens – something so amazing that the only way to explain it is that it is God’s work.

Jesus performs many miracles in the Gospels – and this week we hear about one of them. Jesus and the disciples are riding in a boat and a great storm comes over them. The waves are so big that they rock the boat and start filling it with water. While this is happening Jesus is sound asleep – but the disciples start to get really worried, so they wake him up. And when they do he tells the wind and the waves to stop – and they do. With just the sound of his voice he changed the weather! It was a miracle.

We don’t see too many of those kinds of miracles in our day to day lives, do we? But think of all the miracles we do see!

People can make and do some amazing things – but look at all the things around us that we could never make. We have the miracles of the moon and the stars, of trees and flowers, of animals and the oceans. Each and every one of you is a miracle as well.

Miracles help us to remember that God is in charge. And that’s a good thing to know. Especially when life is hard it’s easy to forget that we aren’t in charge. That’s when I find it helpful to call upon God and remember that if he has the power to create the miracles all around us that he has the power to take care of me as well. God has a plan for each of us. And he has the power to carry it out. And that’s a miracle too.

Will you pray with me?

Dear God,

We thank you for the miracles that surround us – and ask that you help us to stay mindful of the miraculous lives we lead day in and day out.

Amen
