Psalm 66:1-9 and Psalm 150:3-6
A Joyful Noise

By Dr. Carol J Miller

Prepare cards with Psalm 66:1-9 on one side and Psalm 150:3-6 on the other for each child.

Today we are going to talk about two psalms. A psalm is a song about God. In our first psalm the writer is speaking to “all the earth”. The psalmist says (or maybe he shouted) “make a joyful noise to God, all the earth.” The psalmist is so happy about everything that God has made and everything that God has done that he wants the whole world to join him in making a joyful noise about how wonderful God is.

What has God made that you love? [Accept all answers; encourage new ideas: joyful for God making their family; the tree in their backyard; playing games; helping us make peace. Give one or two of your own joys]. So we could sing and shout “thank you to God for [name some of the things the children mentioned. Have a group, have the children say—as loud as they can—thank you God for _________fill in the blank]. How else could we make a joyful noise besides singing and shouting? [Accept all answers].

Let’s hear from another psalm about making a joyful noise that pleases God. This is the last psalm, Psalm 150. See how many different ways of praising God you hear:

3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet! Praise him with harp and lyre! [stop after each verse to see what ways the children heard]

4 Praise him with tambourine and dancing! Praise him with stringed instruments and flute! [Ask for ways]

5 Praise him with loud cymbals! Praise him with resounding cymbals! [Ask for ways] [Before verse 6, ask them to listen for who it is that is supposed to praise the Lord. Then ask, what breathes besides people? You will get a variety of animals].

6 Let everything that has breath praise [the Lord]! Praise [the Lord!]

To God, the sounds of all the animals that God has made is praise of God! Everything that God has made from flowers, to tigers, to stars, to humpback whales, to the wind and the storm to the crashing ocean waves, to us makes joyful noises of praise to God. “Thank you, God, for making us” the whole beautiful world says to God. Please stand up and say this after me–and say it with energy: “Make a joyful noise to God, all the earth!” [Children repeat].

Give each child a card with Psalm 66:1-9 on one side and Psalm 150 on the other].
