Psalm 90
Rest and Rejoice

By Lois Parker Edstrom

Some mornings can be pretty uncomfortable. Have you been awakened by the sudden, shrill sound of an alarm clock or some voice calling “wake up?” Have you jumped out of a warm bed into the cold room, finding the floor cold on your feet? These are unpleasant ways to start the day.

We have a choice about whether we will start our day in a cheerful or grumpy mood. Let’s talk about some ideas to get you off to a good start in the morning.

When you open your eyes think about how much God loves you.

Think about God’s beautiful gifts that are in the natural world.

Think about hugs from your family. Perhaps you can smell the fragrance of bacon coming from the kitchen.

Think about seeing your friends and spending time with them.

Plan to do something special for yourself during the day––something you can look forward to. Perhaps it would be having a cup of cocoa or popcorn after school, or reading a special book, or spending time with your pet, or taking a little nap, or visiting with a special friend.

After a night of rest look forward to the day. We find this prayer in the Bible: “Satisfy us in the morning with your loving kindness that we may rejoice and be glad all our days”

(90:14).

Sleep well, rest, and be glad!
