John 1:29-42

Who Are You?

By Lois Parker Edstrom

OBJECTS SUGGESTED:

Birth certificate. Picture of dove.
A picture of a dove is available at: http://www.dovepage.com/

When you were born, a birth certificate was filled out. If your birth certificate is available and you are able to look at it, you will see that your name, your birthday, and whether you are a boy or a girl, is recorded there. The information on the birth certificate will also include the names of your parents and the place where you were born. In some cases the footprint of the new baby is placed on the birth certificate. It is fun to look at that footprint and think about when you were that small.

Why do you think such care is taken to record the correct information when a baby is born? A birth certificate is the document that proves who you are. When you start school or travel to another country, you must be able to prove where and when you were born and that you are who you say you are.

We have often heard the story of the birth of Jesus. Long before he was born people talked about a way they would know that Jesus was the Son of God. They said there would be a sign from heaven — a dove.

At the time that Jesus was baptized, John the Baptist, and others who were there, saw the sign proving that Jesus was the Son of God. John said, “I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove out of heaven, and it remained on him” (1:32).

The dove, coming from heaven to rest on Jesus, was a sign or proof from God, that Jesus was God’s son.
