Littleton forces us to confront the reality of evil in our midst. What we are seeing in Littleton is the pure, unvarnished face of evil.
Honor is a reward for those who are willing to serve. Sometimes we forget this. We see powerful people who seem to serve mostly themselves.
What are you afraid of? Are you scared of spiders, ... snakes perhaps? Are you afraid that you'll not do well on your next test? Most people are really afraid of one thing more than any other – and that thing is change.
Hurricane Katrina hit in the wee hours of Monday morning. The devastation was far worse than we could've imagined. The death count is still rising. Then came Rita this week. By Thursday it was a category five hurricane bearing down on Galveston. We were told to brace for the worst.
No place is perfect. Everyplace has storms. The same holds true in married life. Not all the days are fair. Storms do come. Marriage does not involve relocating yourself to a place free from storms. Marriage means building the house so strong and sturdy that it can withstand whatever may assault it.
These Beatitudes are one of the central passages in the Bible. Consider where they appear. When Jesus begins his public ministry, he goes up on to a mountain top and sits down among his disciples and the crowds surrounding him.
William Sloane Coffin, sometime chaplain at Yale and national gadfly, put it well when he said, "Democracy is a form of government that demands more virtue of its citizens than any other form of government, but I do not think we can say that democracy guarantees that the virtue will be exercised."
THE JUDGMENT OF THE NATIONS: In this text, Jesus looks into the future, explaining in graphic detail what sort of judgment day awaits every one of us. It’s not a parable. It’s not a fairy tale. It's truth. Jesus tells us that the way we live matters.
One feature of weddings here are the photographs. After the service is complete, and the man and woman are now husband and wife, and the congregation has filed out of the church, there comes a time when pictures are taken. The arrangement I like best is when all the relatives on both sides gather round the bride and groom.
