Colossians 3:1-4

Look Up!

By Dell Smith Klein

KEY SCRIPTURE: Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are on the earth. Colossians 3:2 WEB

OBJECT: Binoculars, Holy Bible

SERMON:

Binoculars (hold up the binoculars) are very interesting. You can go out at night and look through the binoculars and see stars, planets, and the moon. Stars planets and the moon are very far away, but they look very close when you look through binoculars like these.

On a sunny day, we can look at distant mountains and they seem very close, too. While looking through binoculars, we might even be able to see trees or cactus on those mountains that we couldn’t see just with our eyes.

If I stayed inside, and looked at the floor like this (Point binoculars at the floor.) would I see the stars or the moon? (Let the children respond.) No?

Why not? Why wouldn’t I see the stars? I’m looking through binoculars. (Let the children respond.) That’s right! I’d have to be outside and looking up, wouldn’t I?

When we think about Resurrection Day/Easter––that time when Christ died, and then God brought him back to life, we see things the way God does. When we are baptized and receive Christ into our lives, we will never again just point the binoculars at the floor. We’ll want to look up, so we can live the life God wants us to live.

In our Bible story today, the writer said to think about things above, not on things on the earth. If we are really serious about living as a Christian, we’re to act like it! You won’t want to just shuffle along, thinking only of what is right under your nose. You will want to see everything around you the way God does.

We learn to do that as we read this book. (Hold up Holy Bible). It is the Holy Bible, and by reading it and listening to the stories inside, we learn to act the way God wants us to. We learn to be kind to others, and to love God with all our hearts.

This year, as you think about Easter and Jesus’ resurrection, let’s also think about our new life, and how to live as a Christian.

Let’s Pray.

PRAYER

God, our thoughts soar to great heights as we think about you so that we can live our lives the way you want us to live. Thank you for Jesus’ resurrection that we celebrate today. Amen.
