At the time of our story from the Holy Bible, Jesus lived in Capernaum, a town on the northwest corner of the Lake of Galilee. At that time Jesus preached about repentance. Repentance means to apologize for doing wrong things and to try to make them right.

These men, who followed Jesus, became his disciples. A disciple is like a student and these men wanted to study and learn from Jesus so they could serve others. They didn't question if the time was right to go, they knew they had been called by God.

What’s your favorite food? (Give children time to respond.) Maybe you like pizza, or hamburgers, or ice cream. Just talking about food makes you hungry, doesn’t it? Ummm, I’d like to have a pizza right now.
A potter is an artist who makes beautiful objects from clay. You may have a pot, a mug, a plate, or a vase in your home that has been handmade by a potter. (Show pottery.) Or perhaps you have had an opportunity in school to shape an object from clay with your own hands. What if we were to think of ourselves as a chunk of clay?
The nuthatch moves around on a tree in this unusual manner looking for insects, nuts, and seeds to eat. Because they move in an upside down way they find food that other birds miss. There is a lesson to be learned from the nuthatch. Sometimes certain things in our world seem upside down.
What comes to your mind when you hear the word TEST? We are tested in many ways. Some schools require that children know how to tie their shoes before they begin kindergarten. Later, students take spelling tests and math tests. Adults must take a driving test, showing they have the skills necessary to drive a car. Pilots take tests to be able to fly a plane. Can you think of other types of tests?
John told them to come and be baptized as a way of showing God that they meant to change their ways. Then God would forgive their sins. But then, said John, they had to prove that they truly meant it by living their lives differently—by not being selfish and by paying attention to helping others.
